COP is useful when you treat it as a rating with conditions attached. It is not a forecast of your electric bill, a promise about heating speed, or a shortcut for deciding which heat pump will work best at every pool.

The practical question is not “Which COP is bigger?” It is “Were these numbers reported under comparable conditions, and what still needs to be checked for my pool?”

Start with the short definition

COP is an efficiency ratio used for a heat-pump rating. In plain language, it compares the heating effect measured at a stated condition with the work input measured at that same condition.

That definition has two limits:

  • It describes a rating context, not every hour of operation.
  • It does not tell you what your pool will cost to heat without more information.

For a homeowner, the right response to a COP value is not to do a savings calculation from memory. It is to record the conditions that give the value meaning.

Make a four-field COP note

When you see a COP claim, copy these four fields together.

1. The COP value
