How to Clear a Green Pool Fast with AQUASTRONG's Proven Method

A green pool is not only unsightly but can also make swimming unsafe. Fortunately, you don’t have to drain the pool to fix it. With the right steps, you can restore your pool’s clarity and enjoy clean, inviting water again—often in just 24 hours! The key is eliminating the algae that causes the green color and preventing it from returning.

Why is My Pool Green?

The culprit behind green pool water is typically algae growth, which thrives when chlorine or other sanitizers are too low. If the water is light green, algae is just beginning to take hold. A darker green indicates a more significant bloom. Fortunately, algae can be cleared effectively with proper care.

How to Clear a Green Pool Quickly

Here’s a 5-step method to clear your pool in as little as one day:

1. Brush the Pool Walls and Floor

Start by brushing all surfaces of the pool, including walls, floor, and steps, to dislodge the algae. Use a heavy-duty pool brush that’s effective on the surfaces of your pool, especially if it’s made of concrete. The brushing helps break the algae free so that the chlorine can reach it more effectively. Make sure to work thoroughly so that algae is suspended in the water and easier to kill.

2. Test and Adjust Pool Chemistry

Next, you need to ensure that your pool’s chemical levels are balanced. Test the pH and alkalinity of your pool using a reliable test kit. The ideal pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6, and alkalinity should range from 100 to 150 ppm. If your levels are off, adjust them before proceeding. Proper pH and alkalinity ensure that the chlorine works efficiently to kill algae.

3. Shock the Pool with Chlorine

The main step in clearing green pool water is shocking it with chlorine. Pool shock contains a high level of chlorine that will kill algae and bacteria. Choose a shock treatment with at least 70% available chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) for best results. Be sure to shock the pool in the evening, as sunlight can degrade chlorine’s effectiveness.

How much chlorine do you need?

  • For a 10,000-gallon pool, use 1 pound of shock for normal conditions. However, since algae are present, you’ll need to increase the dosage depending on how green the pool is.
  • If the pool is dark green, you may need to triple or quadruple the amount of shock. For example, a 20,000-gallon pool with heavy algae buildup will require around 6 bags of shock.

4. Run Your Pool Filter for 8–24 Hours

After applying the shock treatment, run your pool filter continuously for at least 8 hours overnight. Ideally, you should keep the filter running 24 hours a day until the pool is clear. This helps filter out dead algae and ensures the chemicals are circulating properly. You may need to backwash the filter occasionally to ensure it continues to function efficiently.

If the pool is still not clear after one shock treatment, repeat the process the following night. Within 24 to 48 hours, your pool should start turning from green to cloudy blue, indicating that the algae have been effectively killed.

5. Test Again and Balance the Water Chemistry

Once the pool water has cleared or turned cloudy blue, test the water again. Check the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels. Adjust the chemicals as needed to restore proper balance. At this stage, it’s also a good idea to add a pool clarifier to help the filter remove the remaining debris from the pool water. Continue running the filter for at least 24 hours after this step.

Preventing Algae from Returning

To keep your pool from turning green again, it’s essential to maintain proper sanitizer levels. Regular testing—at least once a week—is crucial to ensuring that your pool water is always properly balanced. If your sanitizer levels drop, add more chlorine or pool shock as needed.

While algaecides can help prevent algae growth, the best method is consistent maintenance and keeping your chlorine levels in check. Consider investing in a pool maintenance routine that includes frequent water testing, proper chemical adjustments, and regular brushing to maintain crystal-clear water year-round.

AQUASTRONG's Pool Care Tips:

  1. Test Frequently: Regularly monitor your pool’s chemical levels to avoid issues with algae.
  2. Shock Your Pool Properly: Don’t be afraid to use a higher-than-usual dose of chlorine when battling algae.
