How to Winterize Your Intex Pool in 12 Easy Steps
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures dip, it's time to start thinking about how to properly winterize your Intex pool. Winterizing is a crucial step to protect your pool from the harsh cold, and doing it correctly ensures that your pool stays in top condition for the next swimming season. Whether you live in a cold or warm climate, winterizing your Intex pool is essential to prolong its lifespan and avoid costly damage.
At AQUASTRONG, we’ve simplified the process of closing your pool for the season so you can enjoy a stress-free winter. Follow these 12 easy steps, and your Intex pool will be well-protected until next year.
1. Clean and Prepare to Drain Your Pool
Before you start draining, make sure the pool is thoroughly cleaned. Vacuum the sides and bottom to remove any debris, which could clog the drainage system. Also, check with your local authorities for any specific regulations on how to drain your pool water to ensure you’re not violating any local ordinances.
Important: Disconnect the pool from any power sources before starting this process. Remove skimmers, ladders, or other accessories and clean them for storage.
2. Attach the Hose to the Drain Connector
Locate the drain connector in your pool kit and attach the hose securely. Ensure the female end of the hose connects to the drain connector, and the other end is pointed away from your house and any structures to avoid water damage.
3. Connect the Drain Connector to the Drain Valve
Remove the cap from the drain valve and attach the drain connector to the valve. Once you’ve secured it, water will begin to flow. Make sure the connector stays tightly in place to avoid leaks while draining.
4. Allow Your Pool to Drain
Draining may take some time, especially with a larger pool. Stay nearby to monitor the progress and check that the hose remains in position. As the water level drops, it’s a good time to start cleaning the walls of your pool with a soft cloth and mild cleaner.
Tip: Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage your pool’s liner.
5. Finish Draining the Pool
Once the water level lowers, you may need to assist in draining the last bit of water. Gently lift the pool’s side to help guide the remaining water toward the drain.
6. Reattach Loose Parts
Remove the drain connector and hose once the pool is drained. Replace the inside drain plug and cap the drain valve. Store these parts in a safe place to avoid losing them.
7. Clean Your Pool
Wipe down the interior of the pool with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild cleaner. Rinse the pool thoroughly to remove any remaining water, dirt, or cleaning residue.
8. Disassemble the Frame and Let the Liner Dry
If your pool has a frame, carefully disassemble it by following the instructions in your owner’s manual. Once the frame is taken apart, allow the liner to air dry completely. If any water remains, sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch inside the liner to help absorb any moisture and prevent sticking.
9. Fold the Liner for Storage
Properly fold your pool liner to save space and protect it during the off-season. Start by folding one-sixth of the liner, then repeat on the opposite side to create a cylindrical shape. Continue folding until the liner is compact and ready to be stored. Be sure it’s completely dry before you fold it to avoid mold or mildew buildup.
10. Drain and Clean Accessories
Don’t forget to clean your pool accessories such as the filter and pump. Drain any remaining water from these parts, wipe them down, and store them in a dry, cool area to prevent mold growth.
11. Replace the Filter Cartridge
If you’re using an Intex pool filter, it’s usually best to replace the filter cartridge before winter. These are inexpensive and can easily be replaced when the pool is reopened next season.
12. Store Your Pool Parts Properly
Store all pool components, including the frame, liner, pump, and hoses, in a dry location. Avoid areas where freezing temperatures could cause damage. Keeping everything together in a labeled container will make it easier to set up your pool when spring arrives.
Why Winterizing Your Intex Pool is Important
Winterizing your Intex pool is not just about protecting the pool from ice damage; it's also about ensuring that all of your pool’s components stay in good condition for the next season. Proper storage prevents mold, mildew, and rust from affecting your pool’s equipment and keeps everything clean and ready for when you reopen it next spring.
Tips for Warm Climates
If you live in a region with milder winters where freezing temperatures are not a concern, you may not need to disassemble your Intex pool completely. However, you should still clean the pool, balance the water chemistry, and apply winterizing chemicals to prevent algae growth and keep the water clear.
